Islam had transformed geometry into a useful and major art form, using shapes as the basis of moulded stucco such as this. Stucco has been a favourite decoration of walls since ancient times and this panel is a truly grand example of this important craftsmanship. This panel incorporates geometric designs which when combined create an almost organic appearance. The principles of stucco pattern are at work here; repetition, symmetry and change of scale all of which creates a bewildering variety of effects. It’s elaborate structure permit light and shade to delightfully play off of its surface.
